Curious and resilient, it thrives in conditions where others falter. But what makes this creature truly remarkable?

Let’s look closer at its unique qualities — and how they mirror the way we help leaders shape and deliver strategy.

What is it?

Hawk moths (family Sphingidae) are large and agile moths found worldwide. Many species are nocturnal, thriving in darkness and pollinating night-blooming plants.

The eyed hawk moth bears bold eyespots on its wings — patterns that mimic the gaze of a predator. When threatened, they reveal these “false eyes,” startling animals far larger than themselves into hesitation or retreat.

Qualities, and their symbolism

  • Eyespots

Striking wing patterns that mimic larger predators — innovation that turns weakness into advantage.

  • Eyes as wisdom

A natural symbol of foresight and perception — reminding us to see opportunities as well as threats.

  • Operating in darkness

Active at night, navigating when visibility is limited — acting with confidence in uncertainty.

  • Transformation

Emerging from chrysalis to moth — a powerful metaphor for change, renewal, and the ability to evolve when it matters most.

And so the eyed hawk moth embodies Strategy & Advisory

From chrysalis to moth, it is a creature shaped by transformation — thriving in darkness, turning weakness into strength, and outwitting larger threats with ingenuity.

For Hexocene, it symbolises strategy at its best: recognising when change is needed, finding innovative solutions, and turning both risks and opportunities into advantage.

The hawk moth reminds us that true success comes from vision, timing, and a great strategy made reality.
